On 13 October, Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko presented Ushakov Medals to seventy-three British veterans of the Arctic Convoys at a ceremony in Manchester.

Participants were warmly welcomed by Lord Mayor of Manchester Cllr. Susan Cooley.

Speaking on behalf of the Russian Government, Ambassador thanked the veterans of the Arctic Convoys for their invaluable contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany and stressed that their heroism will always be remembered in Russia and Britain, while their deeds will continue to serve as the supreme expression of bravery and a high point in human spirit.

The ceremony was attended by the veterans’ families, members of the Royal British Legion, representatives from the Manchester St. Petersburg Friendship Society, the Greater Manchester Lieutenancy and the local City Council, as well as the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester.
